What makes a stone legal.
OSSWW competition is played on natural ocean stones, sourced from the host coastline and inspected by judges before every round.

| Origin | Naturally occurring. Sourced from the host coastline. No manufactured or shaped stones. |
| Maximum weight | 200 grams. |
| Maximum width | 100 millimetres at the widest point. |
| Shape | Flat profile preferred. Smooth or weathered surface. |
| Inspection | Every stone is judge-inspected before competition and marked for the round. |
| Modifications | No coatings, no polishing, no sanding, no drilling. No skipping aids of any kind. |
| Replacement | A stone that fractures during legal use may be replaced once per round with judge approval. |
| Return | Inspected stones return to the host coastline after the event. |
